Francis Mauro has been an athlete with Special Olympics Gibraltar (SOG) for over 13 years now, participating in local training sessions and representing Gibraltar internationally in athletics, swimming and floor hockey. In addition he has represented all of Gibraltar’s SO athletes on the SOG Executive Committee as the athlete representative, and perhaps the pinnacle of his achievements came in 2017 when he was selected as one of only 10 athletes worldwide to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run and carry the Olympic flame to the World Winter Games in Austria. When he’s not pursuing his love of sport Francis is busy in the daytime in his employment as a GHA Messenger. Francis started working in the GHA in 2008 and during the lockdown this year he carried on undeterred to make sure that important supplies and communications were delivered.
When the new SOG sports complex at Europa Point was opened earlier in the year by the Chief Minister, one of the guests of honour was the President and Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia, Mr David Evangelista. Francis was introduced to David who was so impressed with Francis’ achievements and commitment to SOG that he arranged a follow up interview with Francis and has gone on to personally write an article about Francis as an inspiration to him and to other athletes around the World. This was published in the Gibraltar Chronicle on 27th November.
