It began as an idea but the spirit caught on and on Saturday 15th May 2010 the idea translated into a parade of pride tempered with dignity and excitement as Special Olympics Gibraltar athletes made their way through Main Street led by the Gibraltar Sea Scouts pipe band.  They were met by HW the Mayor, Mrs. Olga Zammit and parents and well wishers who applauded their arrival.  A stand had been set up at the Piazza in the centre of town, and on a busy and sometimes breezy morning the athletes were on hand to talk about their travels, show off the many medals they had won and generally enjoy themselves.

Special Olympics athletes and committee meet with Miss World

22/02/10

douglas-with-miss-worldOn the Saturday evening of the twelfth of December 2009, Gibraltar held its collective breath.  The 59th Miss World pageant was taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa and for the very first time Miss Gibraltar was on stage as one of the possible winners.  When the winners name was called Gibraltar expelled its collective breath in an explosion of unbridled delight and joy which swept around our little Rock as Kaiane Aldorino, our beautiful 23year old representative was crowned Miss World.  It has become an unforgettable moment.

Given a rapturous welcome home on 17th December, Kaiane was in the Mayors Parlour playing host to Special Olympics Gibraltar athletes the very next morning with  warm smiles and hugs for all.  It was a joyous occasion, a rare one too, it was first for all of us who were happy to be there.
