Annie Risso was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in the GBC Sports Awards for 2023 held on 9th April 2024, for services to Special Olympics Gibraltar.

Annie set up Special Olympics in Gibraltar in 1985 and has led the organisation ever since with hundreds of athletes attending countless international tournaments, not to mention the annual National Games held in Gibraltar every summer and the hours and hours of regular training which goes behind these events. Years of hard work culminated in the opening of the Special Olympics Gibraltar Sports Complex at Europa in 2019, which now provides a permanent base for Special Olympics in Gibraltar and is very well used.

The awards were broadcast live on GBC from the John Mackintosh Hall with athletes and coaches present, and included video messages from individuals Annie has worked with over the years. The highlight was a personal message from Chairman of the Board of Special Olympics International based in Washington DC, Timothy Shriver.
