Special Olympics Gibraltar made the headlines in the Special Olympics Global newsletter on 13th March 2020 with an article on the opening of our new sports complex. The article stated as follows:

SPECIAL OLYMPICS GIBRALTAR SPORTS COMPLEX OFFICIALLY OPENS TO THE COMMUNITY
It was a spring day full of celebration for the athletes of Special Olympics Gibraltar when their magnificent new Sports Complex officially opened on 27 February.  The inauguration of the centre, made possible by a generous provision from the Government of Gibraltar, was officiated by the Chief Minister, the Honorable Fabian Picardo and the Minister of Sport, the Honorable Steven Linares. Also in attendance were Special Olympics Europe Eurasia President and Managing Director David Evangelista and National Director of Special Olympics Gibraltar Annie Risso, and of course, the athletes of Special Olympics Gibraltar!

Julian and his mother, Helen, for for example, were overjoyed to be included in the ceremony. Helen explained what the movement meant to her and her son: “Special Olympics has absolutely transformed the life of my son in ways I can and cannot explain. Julian has undergone a true transformation since his participation in Special Olympics.  The impact that Special Olympics has had on my son’s life, and ours as a family, cannot be overstated.”

Equipped with training facilities, basketball/futsal courts, meeting rooms, and a full cafeteria and kitchen, the new Sports Complex will be huge boon to the entire Gibraltarian community!
